My Story: I grew up (and still live) in the Bible Belt, so of course thinking differently is extremely frowned upon and your family treats it as negatively as anything you could imagine. I was placed in a Christian Academy until I got asked to leave for supporting Gay Rights, was thrust into a public school where I met my boyfriend (whom I still have), who is an atheist as well. He really opened my eyes to the flaws of Christianity and he is the most wonderful man I’ve ever known.
I switched from Agnostic to Atheist when I was seventeen, and the year following was very rough on me because I had to keep it a secret from my family. I finally told my mother on Easter 2011, which broke her heart completely.
Since I have been open to her, I have grown more tolerant of Christianity, and any religion for that matter, because it’s just really satisfying to know that I’m a genius and they’re all idiots.
